About

“It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.” -Albert Einstein
“It is the responsibility of the student to motivate the teacher.” -Robert Guthrie
Greetings!
My name is Josh, and I am the owner of Mills Guitar Studio.  Ever since I played my first few notes on the guitar in 2000 (at age 13), the guitar has been my primary focus in life.
I have been teaching since 2009, and my goal is to create an environment for students that showcases the fun of playing music.  Although there are several pedagogical methods, the most important aspect of teaching is to follow a student’s passion.
If a student is interested in the curriculum through a personal connection, all other aspects of music become easier to teach.
Initially a self-taught electric and acoustic guitarist, I have attended the following schools to deepen my understanding of music: Collin CollegeThe University of Texas at San Antonio, and Southern Methodist University.  The genres of music I have devoted my time to range from jazz, blues, rock, metal, and classical, and I incorporate all of these styles into my teaching.
During my time in the university system, numerous scholarships and grants were awarded to me.  Similarly, I have performed in masterclasses conducted by internationally renowned artists like Jason VieauxBerta RojasRicardo CoboGabriel BiancoBill Kanengiser, and David Russell (to name a few).
As far as my credentials are concerned, I graduated from The University of Texas at San Antonio with a Bachelor of Music Degree (2013).  From Southern Methodist University, I earned a Master of Music Degree (2016) and a Performers Diploma (2019).  All of these degrees were in Classical Guitar Performance.
However, my most recent credential was not in the music profession.  A teacher once said to me, “Your guitar is not your instrument; your body is your instrument.”  These words have never left me, which is why in December 2022, I became a certified kettlebell instructor (SFG I) through StrongFirst.  Whether the goal is improve speed, stamina, or strength, understanding how to train for these specific athletic adaptations is irreplaceable for a musician that desires to achieve their potential.
